A Letter from the Director:

Avondale Early Center Summer Camp 2020 will begin June 15th at Graham Elementary!

We are working with the District and the State of Michigan Licensing to complete our COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan based on CDC guidelines. Every family who enrolls in our program will receive this document prior to our start date. It will be required for our staff and families to sign and adhere to all policies and procedures that are stated in the document. 

If you had previously enrolled your child, and have not sent a confirmation, please send a message to our Director, Tiffany Mellado at tiffany.mellado@avondaleschools.org to CONFIRM you are still planning to attend Summer Camp. 

If you have not enrolled, but are interested in enrolling your child, please fill out an enrollment packet and submit to tiffany.mellado@avondaleschools.org or leta.brennan@avondaleschools.org.

 What is the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)?

·       State-funded pre-kindergarten for 4-year olds.

·       For families at 101% to 250% of poverty, plus other non-income factors that may prioritize placement.

·       Classrooms located in public schools and childcare centers.

 The Great Start Readiness Program is for preschool age children who may be at increased risk of school difficulties. It is a no or low cost program, available to qualified children who will be 4 years old on or before                              September 1, 2020.  COMPLETED packets will be accepted by the GSRP Enrollment Office during regular office hours or by appointment

            Summer office hours will be posted the second week of May.

Basic Income Guidelines for 
Great Start Readiness Program and Head Start 

While this does not guarantee placement for your child, the following information may help you understand the different opportunities for your child.  

Head Start and Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) use the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for their income eligibility guidelines.

2020-2021 Avondale School District GSRP Acceptance Prioritization

1.      Avondale Families with lowest incomes are placed first. Students with family incomes at 100% FPL or lower who qualify and are referred to Head Start. If they prefer the Great Start Readiness Program, the parent/guardian must sign a Head Start Waiver, which Avondale will provide. 

2.     Students within the Avondale School District attendance area and are 4 years old by September 1, 2020 shall have preference through September 4, 2020.

3.     Students with school of choice siblings who qualify (under 250% FPL) will be considered beginning September 7, 2020. The student must be 4 years old by September 1, 2020 and the family must reside in Oakland County.  

4.      Avondale Students with incomes over 250% FPL may not be admitted until Monday, September 7, 2020.

5.     Students from neighboring districts in Oakland County may be considered for enrollment beginning Monday, September 7, 2020. The student must be 4 years old by September 1, 2020.

Avondale Students with an IEP recommending inclusive placement, who are 4 years old by September 1 ,2020 may be considered for placement in GSRP in consultation with the child’s caseload teacher and the Director of Special Ed. Foster care and Homeless students and students with more risk factors will be placed first.  Low income is not a necessary consideration or a requirement for these students.

Upon submission  of a completed application for your child to attend GSRP in Avondale School District for the 2020-2021 school year, you will be asked to sign to acknowledge the following:

  • You may not find out if your child has been admitted into the GSRP until at least July 1, 2020 and maybe not until as late as September 13, 2020
  • Admittance to GSRP is NOT on a first come, first served basis and even if your application is submitted early in the year, other children with more risk factors and/or lower family income whose applications were received later may be admitted into GSRP before your child
  • We will attempt to give you an idea of the chance of being admitted to this program based on prior years’ experiences, children from families with income levels and risk factors similar to your families.
