Avondale School District officially celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Early Childhood Center on Tuesday, May 12, marking the beginning of an exciting investment in early learning opportunities and family support services for the community. The center, slated to open in 2028, will be the district’s first new building constructed since 1997.
The ceremony took place at the future site of the center, located at 260 S. Squirrel Road in Auburn Hills, across from Avondale’s newly renovated Adult Learning Center. Community members, families, staff, local officials, and project partners gathered to commemorate the milestone and recognize the collaboration that helped bring the project to life.
Made possible through the support of the Avondale community and the district’s successful 2024 Bond, the new Early Childhood Center will expand preschool programming while also housing early-on services, early childhood special education programming, and opportunities for children ages 0–3.
The groundbreaking program included a project overview from AUCH Construction, remarks from Avondale Superintendent Dr. James Schwarz and Director of Early Learning & Child Care Services Tiffany Mellado, followed by the ceremonial groundbreaking.
“We are incredibly grateful to our community for supporting the 2024 Bond and helping make this vision a reality,” said Dr. James Schwarz, Superintendent of Avondale School District. “This center represents our commitment to investing in our youngest learners and creating opportunities for children and families from the very beginning of their educational journey.”
District leaders also extended special thanks to the Auburn Hills Mayor, City Council, and Auburn Hills Chamber of Commerce for their continued partnership and support throughout the planning process. The district additionally recognized the contributions of the Early Childhood Center Planning Committee, which included district leaders, preschool staff, families, and community members. The committee played a key role in helping shape the development and direction of the project from its earliest stages.
Once complete, the Early Childhood Center will provide a dedicated space designed to support early learning, family engagement, and specialized services for children throughout the community. Avondale School District will continue to share updates as construction progresses. For more information about Avondale’s 2024 bond projects, visit www.avondaleschools.org/bond.
