Avondale School District proudly welcomed five outstanding athletes and coaches into the Avondale Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, September 12, 2025. Honorees were celebrated during a heartfelt induction ceremony, treated to a delicious dinner catered by Avondale’s Dining Services team, and recognized at halftime during the evening’s home football game—a fitting tribute to their achievements and contributions to Avondale athletics.
This year’s inductees represent excellence, leadership, and dedication on and off the field:
Christopher Barton (Class of 2015) – A basketball standout, Barton earned All-State and All-OAA honors as a varsity captain before excelling at Niagara University as a four-year starter, team captain, and Unsung Hero Award recipient. His professional career overseas included earning Finland MVP honors and Most Outstanding American recognition.
Keshia Hines (Class of 2007) – A dominant basketball force, Hines was a three-time All-State selection and Dream Team member for the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, and Oakland Press. She scored over 1,000 points for Avondale, set records for blocked shots and rebounds, and went on to compete at the University of Louisville at the highest collegiate level.
Tony Messina – A cornerstone of Avondale football for nearly 30 years, Messina served 20 seasons as a varsity assistant before leading as head coach for eight seasons. Under his leadership, the Yellow Jackets made three playoff appearances and achieved an impressive 193–142 record. His accolades include multiple league and regional Coach of the Year awards.
Mike Preston (Class of 2000) – A standout three-sport athlete, Preston earned nine varsity letters and captained the football, basketball, and track teams. He capped his high school career as a state champion in discus and continued his success at Western Michigan University in shot put, discus, and hammer throw.
Stuart Russ (Class of 2015) – A four-year starter and 2014 captain for Avondale soccer, Russ holds the school record for most starts. He earned All-Conference and All-County honors three times, was a two-time All-State selection, and was ranked #1 in the county in 2014.
The evening was a celebration not only of athletic talent but also of the dedication, teamwork, and community spirit these individuals embody. Their legacies continue to inspire current and future Yellow Jackets to strive for excellence—on the field, in the classroom, and beyond.
