Support for Avondale Families During SNAP Benefits Pause
Dear Avondale Staff and Families,
On October 23, the State of Michigan announced that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) had been directed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to temporarily pause the issuance of November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
This federal delay affects families across the country and may cause concern or hardship for those who rely on these benefits. We want our Avondale families to know that you are not alone — our community is here to support you.
Below are several resources available to help ensure every family has access to food and support during this time:
- Free Meals at School:
All Avondale students receive free breakfast and lunch every school day. We encourage families to take advantage of these meals — no sign-up or paperwork is needed.
 - Gleaners Mobile Food Pantry:
Avondale partners with Gleaners to host a monthly drive-thru food pantry for families in need. All families are welcome to attend, and you can apply for a Gleaners card directly during pickup. Families can also visit other Gleaners locations throughout the area to access groceries more than once per month.

 - Blessings in a Backpack:
Through our partnership with Blessings in a Backpack, we provide food items for students to take home over the weekend. Families can sign up anytime to participate.

MI Kids Initiative
The Avondale School Board recently endorsed the Invest in MI Kids initiative. Invest in MI Kids is a constitutional amendment to improve and stabilize school funding for Michigan’s public schools.
The Invest in MI Kids ballot initiative would amend the Michigan Constitution by adding a 5% fair-share surcharge on income over $500,000 for single filers or over $1 million for joint filers. This would generate about $1 billion per year for Michigan’s public schools. This revenue, subject to annual audit, would be guaranteed to go to the School Aid Fund and would be required to be used exclusively for local classrooms, teacher recruiting and retention, reducing class sizes, and career and technical education. Please see the informational sheet below or investinmikids.org for more information.
