Gifted & Talented Education
Avondale’s Gifted Education program provides specialized learning opportunities for gifted students from kindergarten through high school. What began in 2017 with GATE for students in grades 2–8 has grown into a comprehensive K–12 program designed to challenge, support, and inspire gifted learners at every stage.
Currently serving students from kindergarten through 10th grade, Avondale will continue expanding its high school gifted cohort to include grades 11 and 12 in 2027 and 2028. As one of the only tuition-free public gifted education programs in Michigan, Avondale is committed to providing challenging, engaging learning opportunities that help gifted learners develop their strengths, build confidence, and pursue their passions.

Program History
Since 2017, Avondale’s gifted program has been shaped through a powerful partnership with families. Parents believed in a vision for gifted learners that went beyond acceleration alone—one that recognized the academic, social‑emotional, and developmental needs of gifted students.
As more families have chosen Avondale, the district has been able to grow its gifted community in a way that is thoughtful, responsive, and sustainable. That growth has made it possible to expand opportunities and deepen expertise.
A Purposeful Gifted Experience
Building on a strong foundation, Avondale intentionally cohorts gifted students to provide more learning alongside intellectual peers—without sacrificing choice or acceleration. Students benefit from expert educators, stronger relationships, and consistent, challenging learning environments, while still enjoying a full comprehensive high school experience with clubs, sports, social activities, and advanced opportunities.

Application Criteria
Gifted Magnet Programming Application Criteria
All students applying for Avondale Gifted Magnet Programs must complete an application to be considered for the following rounds of the process.
*A student’s disciplinary history is a required part of the application process. (Incoming kindergarten/homeschooled students are exempt from this requirement.)
Criteria a district can use to deny/classify an applicant as ineligible:
No available seats. A district can limit the number of nonresident students it accepts by grade, school/building, or specific program. If there are more eligible applicants than available seats, the district must use the statutory selection process, including a random draw when necessary.
The student doesn't meet the requirements of the particular program. For example, if the student is applying to a specialized program that has enrollment requirements, the student must meet the same applicable requirements that a resident student would have to meet.
Recent suspension. A district may refuse an applicant who is or was, within the preceding 2 years, suspended from school.
Expulsion. A district may refuse an applicant who has been expelled from another district.
Requesting Records (Parent/Guardian)
You can request your child's education records, which can include disciplinary records maintained by the school, such as:
Suspension and expulsion records
Discipline referrals and incident reports
Written statements concerning the incident
Administrative decisions or discipline determinations
Correspondence concerning the discipline
Records concerning investigations of the incident, to the extent they are maintained as education records
Records documenting dates, reasons, and consequences of disciplinary actions
Relevant emails or other electronically maintained records if they are maintained by the school as education records
FERPA gives a parent the right to inspect and review the student's education records, subject to certain exceptions.
*The school must respond within 45 (calendar) days of receiving the request. You can use this Form Letter to request records from your child’s school.
Program FAQ
FAQ: Gifted Education Support and Programming – Avondale School District
What is the Gifted Education Program?
Avondale's Gifted Education Program is a K-12 continuum of support: a K-1 cohort at Woodland Elementary, the GATE Magnet School for grades 2-8, the AHS Gifted Cohort currently serving grade 9, universal supports from classroom teachers at every level, accelerated pathways, and ongoing staff training.
What's available at each grade band?
K-1: Woodland GT team identifies and supports gifted learners. After first grade exit testing, students transition to GATE or continue with inclusive practices at any Avondale elementary school.
Grades 2-8: GATE Magnet School.
Grade 9: AHS Gifted Cohort and Accelerated Pathways, with plans to expand through grades 10-12 over time.
Grades 10-12: Continued access to accelerated pathways as the cohort expands.
How are transitions supported?
K-1 to Grade 2: Based on first grade exit testing, students move to GATE or continue with inclusive practices at their home school.
All first graders in the K-1 cohort take the CogAT in March of their first grade year to help determine the best second grade placement, with other factors considered as well, so that every student ends up in the right fit for their learning needs.
Grade 8 to 9: Jennifer Wilson coordinates with AMS, GATE Magnet, and AHS counselors, keeps families informed, and encourages self-advocacy.
High school: Ongoing guidance on accelerated pathways for academic, course selections, college and career planning.
What are Universal Supports, and what teacher training is provided?
Provided by classroom teachers with gifted students at every level, K-12: understanding of asynchronous development, differentiation strategies, social-emotional needs of gifted learners, and grade-level specific support strategies.
Michelle Gierman, Gifted Education Coordinator, builds this capacity by:
Co-teaching and modeling strategies with teachers and admin
Consulting with counselors and social workers
Coaching staff district-wide for consistency building to building
What does the Accelerated Pathways Coordinator do?
Jennifer Wilson, Gifted Transitions & Accelerated Pathways Coordinator, offers:
Academic & course planning to meet the specific needs of the learner
Planning could Include the following: earlier AP access, earlier dual enrollment, Advanced middle college pathways
Post Secondary planning support to meet the needs of the learner's goals
*Note: Acceleration isn't required for all gifted students; differentiation matters most. AP, honors, dual enrollment, and middle college are open to any student.
How is AI used in gifted education?
Supports personalized learning and facilitates meaningful conversations about student needs and goals; always per MDE's six Essential Practices: Purposeful Use, Data Safety and Privacy, AI Literacy, Human Oversight and Critical Thinking, Equitable Practices, Transparency
Addressing Common Misconceptions
Not all gifted students need extreme acceleration.
Depth matters as much as speed, in regular classes, dual enrollment, and AP.
Asynchronous development, twice exceptionality, and other factors require careful consideration of best practices
