Avondale 7th Grader Named State Merit Winner in 3M Young Scientist Challenge

Adhrit developed CocoScrub as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional, non-biodegradable dishwashing sponges. His design uses coconut husk, a cornstarch binder, and 3D-printed molds to create a reusable scrubber intended to reduce waste and help address concerns surrounding microplastic pollution.

The coconut husk provides natural antibacterial properties, water absorption, and durable fibers, making it a promising material for a reusable kitchen scrubber. Adhrit developed CocoScrub in two designs: a traditional handheld scrubber and a version with a handle.

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge, presented by Discovery Education and 3M, challenges middle school students to use science, creativity and problem-solving to develop solutions to real-world challenges. Adhrit was recognized as a 2026 State Merit Winner, representing Michigan with his CocoScrub project.
