Avondale Theatre Company Sells Out International Festival, Earns Multiple Awards

From July 31 through August 15, ATC staff, students, and families spent two weeks representing Avondale at one of the world’s largest performing arts festivals. The 2026 trip marked the fifth time ATC has been selected to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, placing Avondale among an elite group of high school theatre programs nationwide.

ATC performed Terry Pratchett’s Mort four times at Central Hall, selling 480 of 500 available tickets, including two sold-out performances. The company sold more tickets than any other high school participating in the festival and received several strongly positive reviews. ATC also earned two awards from the festival, while its technical crew received a special recognition award from Live Arts Production. The award was presented to just three schools—and ATC was the only public high school among the recipients.

Beyond the stage, students immersed themselves in the history and culture of Scotland and England. Their experiences included tours of Edinburgh and Stirling Castle, High Tea at Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Military Tattoo, a trip through the Scottish Highlands, and feeding Highland “coos” (cows). In London, students visited the London Eye, Kensington Gardens, museums and galleries, the Harry Potter Studios and the famous Notting Hill Bookshop. The group also climbed Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views of Edinburgh.

ATC’s success in Edinburgh is just one part of a remarkable year for the program. During the 2025-26 school year, the company earned first place in the entire state of Michigan at the 2026 Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association (MIFA) State Competition, further demonstrating the talent, dedication and collaboration of its students and staff.
