Innovation Day Showcases Student Creativity & Problem-Solving

Working alongside their classroom teachers with the support of gifted education and instructional technology coach Michelle Gierman, students at the elementary level, middle school, and GATE Magnet School engaged in the design thinking process to identify real-world problems and develop innovative solutions. Throughout the semester, students researched issues, brainstormed ideas, created prototypes, gathered feedback, and refined their thinking before presenting their final projects.

The challenges students chose to tackle reflected both local and global concerns. Some groups explored ways to protect beetle populations and support butterfly life cycles, while others focused on addressing the global water crisis, improving environmental sustainability, or developing equitable and responsible uses of artificial intelligence. Each project highlighted students' ability to think creatively while applying learning to meaningful real-world situations.

As part of their presentations, students also shared how they used MagicSchool AI throughout the process to strengthen their AI literacy skills, generate ideas, conduct research, and refine their solutions. By learning how to use artificial intelligence as a tool for innovation and problem-solving, students gained valuable experience navigating emerging technologies responsibly and effectively.

Innovation Day provided students with an opportunity to showcase not only their final solutions, but also the learning journey behind them. Through design thinking, collaboration, and purposeful technology integration, Avondale students demonstrated that they are ready to tackle complex challenges and create positive change in their communities and beyond!
